Contact dermatitis is an inflammatory response of the skin caused by direct contact with an irritant or an allergen. The second most common type of contact dermatitis is caused by exposure to a material to which you are allergic or hypersensitive.
The most common type of contact dermatitis is the result of contact with:
- Oxidizing chemicals (that may not be obvious or are hidden; for example, highly chlorinated water)
- Detergents, solvents or highly alkaline substances
- Poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac
- Nickel or other metals
- Medications-especially topical medications
- Cosmetics
- Rubber
- Fragrances, perfumes
Contact dermatitis may also be caused by photosensitivity (exposure to oxidation caused by sunlight) when the affected area of the skin has been exposed to shaving lotions, sunscreen, perfumes and products containing coal tar.
The symptoms associated with contact dermatitis in the affected area are:
- Itching
- Inflammation (redness)
- Swelling
- Tenderness
- Lesions or a rash at the site of exposure which may ooze, drain or crust and may become raw, scaly or thick
Scratching a rash can spread the inflammation to other areas of the skin and lead to infection and potential scarring.

I wanted to share my story with you and how your products where an answer to my prayers. When I had my second child six years ago I developed severe dermatitis to my face and scalp. My daughter, Raelyn is in the 4th grade and has dealt with prickly, irritated and sensitive skin since she was a baby. It didn’t really bother her until lately when kids in her class started making fun of her because of the ruff pimple like appearance all over her back, cheeks and arms. She didn’t want to wear shorts or even short sleeved shirts for the fear of more teasing.
